| merlin holiday ficlet (part 1/12) |
[Dec. 26th, 2009|11:47 pm] |
hope everyone's xmas and boxing day were grand. mine included family, friends and food which are at the v. top of the my list of Good Things. there might also have been some nice gifts.
dusting off my keyboard a little.
title: twelve days of christmas (1/12) author: snottygrrl rating: G pairing: Arthur/Merlin (eventually) word count: 100 summary: an unexpected gift leaves merlin guessing warnings: modern au disclaimer: This story is based on characters and situations created and owned by the BBC and Shine. No money is being made and no copyright or trademark infringement is intended. This author is not responsible for underage readers. Please observe the ratings, warnings, and age of legal consent for your country. author's notes: every year, somebody asks the question as whether the twelve days of christmas are the ones leading up to the 25th, or somewhere surrounding the 25th. i mentally sigh and explain that the twelve days of christmas start on the evening of the 25th, ending on twelfth night (the eve of the 5th of jan) and epiphany (the 6th of jan). hopefully I'll manage all twelve days [*crosses fingers*]
( The sound of the flat buzzer surprises Merlin. )
remember, comments are love.
before i go i have to do a quick vid rec. like a wall of stars (arthur/merlin) by deppaholic47. this one is well worth the click. it's not really a story per se, but not just a let's-illustrate-the-song either. got excellent editing and creative use of sound and image and a great song. i downloaded a copy to keep for future viewing. just wanted to do a quick post to send blessings to everyone. no matter what you celebrate, if you live in a western country the next few days should be calm (well, i suppose unless you work in retail). so i hope everyone has a chance to take a breath or two and be grateful for all that you have.
i'm particularly grateful for all of you that read this blog, both those i've met in rl and those i haven't. you've enriched my life in ways i never would have dreamed. fandom, you are crazy and wonderful and so, so full of love i'm always humbled by it. thanks everyone for letting me visit your lives and play around in different sandboxes.
happiest of hols ♥ |

| christmas is coming |
[Dec. 23rd, 2009|11:25 pm] |
happy christmas to all my buds in nz and oz. happy christmas eve to the rest of you.
spent the day making cookies with the nephews, mum and s-i-l. have just had a lovely chat with phenix_tears. am also eating the ruined cooked truffles (which have turned into sort of a chocolate soup with a layer of butter fat on top, but still yum).
so if you haven't seen the wonderous fic that hermette and i_claudia wrote off my prompt of modern!au, rentboy!arthur fic, you should go get a cuppa and check out the awesomesauce this fast, unreasonable spring (arthur/merlin, nc17, 26792words). it's smexy and romantic and angsty and sweet and generally wonderful.
i'll be around the next coupla days, though i know a heap of you won't be. hope everyone has a splendid time, whether or not you are not celebrating xmas. ♥ stop on over and say hello if you get lonely [*smooches*] |

i'm not going to carry on and on about avatar, but i so could. i'll just say it's the most amazing thing i've seen since lotr. it's gorgeous. i'll likely pay to see it again in the theatre, and i'll likely pay to see it in 3d again. no, it's not a complicated story, but it's a good story. it's also a story we westerners need to be told over and over. also? i don't think it would be so stunning if weta hadn't been involved. i'll stop, because otherwise i'd gush for pages about it.
on an entirely different note, i spent some time looking into writing a somewhat 'authentic' christmas/yule/solstice/midwinter arthur/merlin, but as far as i can tell during the arthurian era they didn't celebrate anything during the season. anyone know anything different? i mean not that i have an issue reading or writing something with a midwinter celebration whether or not it existed, however i'm just wondering.
if you are looking for a sweet, short, wonderful xmas h/d, check out saras_girl's festive fundamentals (h/d, pg13 (for language), ~2300words). it comes from her foundations 'verse, but you don't need to have read that to enjoy. it includes decorating, draco being draco and a small child. ♥
also, also, have to point towards sarahtales recap of this season's merlin. it made me smile (you can read her thoughts halfway through season one here).
thank you, thank you to tyellas, merrycontrary, and novembersnow for the pretty, pretty cards ♥ |

evannichols and i had a Movie Tragedy today when we tried to go to see avatar. but it was okay, because they gave us coupons to see the movie another time (and for us, that's going to be tomorrow). they offered to let us go see the 2d version right then for free as well, but i don't want to see it twice, and since cameron intended for it to be seen in 3d, we went shopping instead. this was rather productive and included a tasty lunch, so it turned out well.
i may also have made evannichols watch a few excerpts from merlin and secrets & magic [*looks innocent*]
spent the evening with neighbour M, her two kitties and two of her friends talking, playing board games and doing a little experimental cooking. the ingredients were not wisely chosen, but it did come out eatable and not frightening. alterations are being considered.
have to point to a cute story by phreakycat, service area (arthur/merlin, r, ~2400words). written for the kinkme prompt of pudsey!au m/a phone sex. v. v. funny.
right, have to stop posting so i can watch the final episode. |

so wasn't going to post tonight, since i spent most of the day putzing with family, which, though nice, isn't post worthy. also had some lovely chats on the phone, but those too are not reason to post.
on top of that, i haven't seen the new merlin yet (due to the above) though am likely to watch it shortly.
but then i read All the White Horses (Have Gone Ahead) (arthur/merlin, pg13, ~4500words) by lantean_drift, and thought 'now that's worthy of a post.' it's a lovely quiet fic about merlin and arthur dealing with Stuff. flangsty and sweet and well worth the read. don't forget to tell the author how much you enjoyed ♥
also, also, i can't help but rec oldenuf2nb's advent series again. i love her h/d ♥ |

so i've made tentative friends with my neighbour across the hall, and she knocked on the door last night to ask if i was interested in doing some xmas things on sunday evening. i said i'd be delighted and gestured towards my computer to say i'd just been planning Weekend Events with evannichols and my bro, forgetting that just before i'd answered the door i'd clicked on day 17 of advent pr0n. the screen was filled with a v. buff, nearly naked man. 'hello neighbour, welcome to my life.' [*facepalm*]
treated myself to the v. v. cheap theatre today in my neighbourhood (and not just because it's called avalon) and saw cloudy with a chance of meatballs. i'd recommend it for a netflix list if you like animation. it gets a little lost on it's message i think, but it's amusing and nicely animated.
also, living in a Big American City means that live theatre shows (and movie theatres, as well) sell out way faster even in a recession than they do in nz. bugger.
also, also, had a nice chat with an odd, but interesting character before the movie and an odd, but charming artist lady after. [*nods*] |

today cherrybina, derryere, lamardeuse, i_claudia and evannichols each made me laugh out loud, which scared the cat, but made me happy. so thanks for that :D
and i totes pwned my xmas cards today :D even in time to walk to the post office (listening to my recently re-acquired a christmas together with john denver and the muppets [*adores*]) and buy the rest of the stamps i needed and send off [*cheers*]
also there was crafting that may or may not have taken care of presents for my nephews and bro & s-i-l. [*nods*]
okay the real reason why i wrote this is to ask a question as to whether anyone on my flist has read cassie clare's draco trilogy and the mortal instruments series. i want to debunk something a friend of mine has been told, but i've read neither one of them so can't speak from solid ground. anyone? |

christmas continues with moar cards in and a few cards out (thanks to pir8fancier and coffeejunkii. your cards weren't in this batch, but should go out soon ♥). i realised that i never asked for addresses from my new merliny friends, and now it's a bit late [*facepalm*] ah well, know that i'm thinking of y'all. and those of you whose addys i do have, the cards are slowly making their way towards you in small batches.
( so you think you can dance finale - spoilers )
not sure how i'm going to keep track of the week without sytycd, or merlin or other landmarks. maybe that just means a job is on it's way [*crosses fingers*] |

i spent way, way too long today printing out all the envelopes for for my hols cards. because it turns out you can't merge or export from the mac address program. oh sure you can print envelopes straight out of it in an extremely limited way that does not allow for any useful subset to be printed, but export the addresses as a group? guess again. bah. 'tis done now, and even though i should start in on actually writing them, that's not going to happen tonight. so, yeah, one could say i'm having general christmas fail this year (we won't even talk about how i'm doing on presents).
it's the last week of so you think you can dance [*weeps*] ( some thoughts - spoilers )
got a lovely card from earth_magic today. [*smooches*]
had other things i was going to share, but am fried from printer wrestling, so am going to try and catch up with today's posts and go to bed. |

i have nothing but the utmost of respect for people for whom english isn't their first language, and yet write fanfic in it. i know plenty of folk whose writing far surpasses native english speakers and their stories always sweep me away. however, if the writer isn't that fluent in english, i often find that one or two unintended things happen while i'm reading. first, i'm reminded of just what a quirky language english is and how many exceptions there are in the way a sentence must be constructed to sound natural, and two, i sometimes learn new words because the author has chosen a word that some dictionary said was a translation of what they wanted to say, but is rarely used these days in spoken english (which i always consider a bonus, because, hey, new word! yes, i am a nerd). i could never come close to writing in any language other than the various permutations of english, so i'm always gobsmacked by anyone who can write in something other than their native language.
postman brought a package today as well as an hysterical card from lusiology [*big smooches*]
also have to thank dihall for the lovely virtual ornament [*cuddles close*]
this was one of those days where i tried to do many things and the results were scattered. the trying-to-get-started-on-sending-xmas-cards made little progress, but though little, was a bit of progress. the trying-to-watch-vampire-diaries failed utterly. all i could distinguish were a lot of petulant teenagers who all looked the same, though some were vamps. whatever. i did manage to make a glittery xmas ornament though :D
you may also notice some new icons and a kick-arse mood theme and the wintery look to the blog. the theme is v. v. awesome and i need to feel a lot of different things so i can use them all :D would like to note, that though i love a lot of the close cropped icons, every time i see them i think how they are tapu. that's a maori word. the english word taboo comes from that word. in maori tradition it's considered spiritually bad to crop a picture of someone's head in any way. we had to be careful about promo photos and such when i was working in my last job. so yeah, artsy and cool and also tapu.
yes i'm a tad random today [*headdesk*] |

| movies, fic and parties |
[Dec. 13th, 2009|09:38 pm] |
there are still a couplaone movies that haven'thasn't been guessed correctly over at my guess the movie meme-age that i posted earlier today.
so i haven't said much the last few days. friday was good. started the day out with breakie with evannichols and thrihyrne at a nifty little restaurant where you get to cook your own pancakes [*grins*] then spent most of the rest of the day shopping with evannichols. there were groceries and a successful pillow purchase and (unfortunately) v. unsuccessful trouser buying that will have to be co-ordinated with evannichols to return. but i'm sure we can somehow manage to accomplish that. we also saw a v. v. dangerous bit of bakery (that evannichols took a pic of).
saturday, i spent a good deal of time in my neighbours flat. she had a xmas party (that i'd been invited to). i ended up kibitzing with her while she was cooking the soup in the afternoon and stayed through the party. met a few of her friends and got a chance to really talk with everyone from the three other flats in the building, which was great.
now i'm watching the muppet christmas carol with the director audio turned on. it's a little bit sad since this was the first film made after jim henson passed, but interesting. brian (jim's son and the one who directed and produced the film) mentions that people talk about what a quirky adaptation it is and, in fact, it probably is the adaptation with the most direct lines from dicken's short story. folk just aren't used to it, so don't realise how accurate it is.
and of course, some recs. first off, don't forget to give your love to camelotsolstice fics and the diligent who are writing entire advent series. i've been following and enjoying immensely oldenuf2nb, et_cetera55, tetsubinatu series (the last two are over at merlinadvent, the first in her own lj). in the specifics for recs, cherrybina was having a bad day so asked for cheer. there are pretty pics and some hot, hot comment fic. well worth the time to peruse if you haven't yet.
and speaking of hot, hot fic, i_claudia has put up a series of ficlets she did for prompts including my prompt for rentboy!arthur. i'm proud to say that she and hermette were heavily bunnied by the prompt and are currently collaborating on a longer version. and you should go over there and BRIBE THEM to WRITE MORE IMMEDIATELY. seriously.
and finally a cute vid by digitalshrine, kiss the girl (arthur/merlin). |
